Tips for keeping your little one safe at home

Keeping your little one safe is a top priority and the time has come…it’s time to baby proof your home. While tackling the entire house may seem overwhelming, a good place to start baby proofing would be with electrical hazards. Unfortunately, the sheer amount of electrical hazards you need to search for makes it easy to miss areas that need to be child proofed. It may sound silly, but one of the best ways is to get down on your hands and knees so you can spot hazards from your child’s perspective. While on the ground look for the following:

Potential hazard 1: Hanging cords that loop
Potential hazard 2: Long extension cords
Potential hazard 3: Power strips and electrical outlets that are hidden by furniture
Potential hazard 4: Cords that are an inconvenience if they are unplugged

Once you’ve identified the hazards, how do your reduce or better yet eliminate the hazards to make your home safe for your little one? Please note this list does not cover all your baby’s potential hazards…so if you see something that looks at all dangerous to your child go ahead and child proof it!

Tip 1: Cover any outlets that do not have a plug inside them, extension cords, wall outlets and power strips

Tip 2: Shorten cords that hang down, such as a lamp on an end table, a curious baby will pull on these and end up with a lamp on their head! Ouch!

Tip 3: Secure cords that run along the ground. You can run the cords under the carpet or tack them to the base boards.

Tip 4: Look for plugs you do not want unplugged and SECURE them. Speaking from experience, you baby will be intrigued by the cords and will be a pulling machine!

Tip 5: As for cords attached to window treatments, shorten them, attach plastic covers to the ends and secure them to the wall.

Tip 6: Keep monitor cords AWAY from the baby’s crib. Soon enough your baby will learn to pull him or herself up and expand their reach beyond the crib, ultimately trying to reach for the monitor cord. As recommended by JAMA, keep all monitor cords a minimum of 3 feet from the crib. It’s also recommended to use a baby monitor shelf, such as VuSee, to get the monitor cords away from the crib and potential strangulation.

I hope this tips are helpful. I’d love to hear what additional tips you have for babyproofing your home to keep you little one safe.

Where do we hang the baby monitor?

Gerald Beranek is a husband, a dad and fortunately an inventor. Four weeks before their son was born, Gerald Beranek and his wife encountered a problem of modern-day parenting: where to put the baby monitor.

“Before my son Levi was born, my wife and I were getting the nursery ready and the last thing I had to do was hang the camera for the baby monitor,” Beranek recalled. “I was trying to find the best place for it that would offer the best view of the crib, but I didn’t want to put a screw in the wall.”

Having read about the risk of death by strangulation from baby monitor cords, he also did not want to place the monitor on or near the crib. “I remember thinking, there has to be a better way to do this.”

Beranek, who is a mechanical engineer with product design experience, ultimately used his 3-D printer to solve the dilemma. According to Beranek, he made a quick design of an angled corner shelf, 3-D printed it and hung it using 3M Command strips so it could be removed without damaging the wall.

“When other new parents came to see the baby they all noticed the little shelf holding the baby monitor camera that was stuck in a corner of the nursery and they wanted to know where they could get one,” said Beranek. “So I started printing more on my 3-D printer and began selling the shelf which is now know as VuSee, Universal Baby Monitor Shelf.”

VuSee is manufactured by BeraTek Industries in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Vusee now hangs in more than 15,000 nurseries around the country, including Canada, United Kingdom and Australia.

VuSee is available for purchase on vusee.co, Amazon, Target, Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby and Walmart.

“As a dad, I’m happy I can help other moms and dads eliminate the baby monitor dilemma and offer them VuSee as a simple and easy-to-use solution. At the end of the day, it is all about keeping our little ones safe,” said Beranek.

Planning a baby nursery can be an enormous task. With so many products on the market how do you choose? Most of your purchases will depend on personal preference but a few nursery basics will get you prepared for the arrival of your newborn. It’s important to make your nursery is as much functional as it is fabulous!

A crib or bassinet

This is the most essential item, your baby’s bed. Whether you pick a fancy crib or a simple bassinet, your baby’s sleeping spot will most likely become the focal point of the nursery. They both come in a variety of styles and price ranges. How much you spend and the style you choose is up to you, just make sure you are purchasing a quality item made of the best materials. Your baby will be spending a lot of time here!

Baby video monitor and mount

I can tell you from personal experience, one of the hardest things for a new parent to do is to relax when your baby is in another room. Baby monitors help relieve that stress by allowing the parents to have constant audio and visual contact with their baby. This is a top essential for most parents. Once again there are a ton of brands and price ranges. See our list of top baby video monitors and find what best suits your budget.

The VuSee by Beratek Industries is the only universal baby monitor mount on the market. It is quick and easy to install, compatible with most baby monitors and allows you to see the entire crib with perfect monitor angle. The VuSee also is a safety product that helps prevent strangulation from a monitor cord. It is a must have for baby’s nursery!

Changing table

Lots of diaper changing will be going on during your baby’s first year. While you ae busy learning how to change a diaper on the fly it is incredibly helpful to have an organized, stationary changing table in the baby’s nursery. Having quick access to the essentials like diapers, wipes and ointments is a huge help during this hectic time! Whether you pick a table with shelves, drawers or a combination of both how you organize it is up to you. Most changing tables come with a comfortable changing pad for baby to lay on, if not they are available to purchase separately as well.

A fan

Hot in baby’s room? Maybe not but an electric fan does more than cool off the room during nap time. It provides white noise that helps mask household noises like doorbells or barking dogs. The hazy whirl that helps relax and put your little one to sleep can be a life saver! No room for a fan? Try setting a radio between stations to get that sweet sound of static, or download one of many cell phone apps with your choice of noises from hair dryers, vacuums and heart beats. As always make sure to keep fans and cords far away from baby’s reach.

A dressser

Your little one will definitely go through several changes of clothing each day. Keeping all those tiny clothes in an organized dresser is a much needed thing. Dressers should have at least three drawers and should have several compartments to separate socks, bibs, onesies and other small items.

Night-light

So your baby won’t be afraid of the dark right away (or maybe never) so mom and dad this one is more for you! A decorative night-light will help to guide you through the nursery for those 2 am feedings without bumping your toes! The night-light’s mellow glow instead of the glare of a light bulb also will help your baby learn to distinguish between night and day!

While not truly a night-light my youngest son loved his Glowing Seahorse (Fisher Price) Bonus, it searved a source of light AND it played soothing music which was a huge bonus!

Clothes hamper

With all the clothes that your baby will go through, you will quickly find a convenient hamper in the nursery is a huge help! Hampers are available in a wide range of styles, sizes and materials. Keep in mind that many bedding sets offer coordinating hamper designs.

Rocking chair or glider

A comfortable rocking chair or glider for feeding and rocking your baby to sleep is very important. You will spend countless number of hours bonding with your baby but you will be almost completely immobile. Consider a side table next to your chair to keep snacks, bottled water, a few magazines or a novel to help keep you comfortable while soothing your baby.

Mobile

Mobiles have long been a nursery fundamental. They help to soothe babies to sleep and keep them entertained when they wake up. Most mobiles have a music feature and variety of moving figurines that range from lights, mirrors and figurines. Some crib bedding sets come with matching mobiles but there also is a huge variety of them on the market that can be purchased separately.

Now that you are set with the nursery essentials you can start adding those personal touches and themes that will make your nursery unique to your parenting style! Pinterest is a great resource for nursery themes. Congratulations and happy shopping!

VuSee is quick and easy to install in your nursery. VuSee offers three options for mounting to the wall. Which you use will depend on the type of wall you have and the method you’re most comfortable with.

3M Command Strips

The most popular option for mounting the VuSee shelf is with the included 3M Command Strips. When using this method it’s important to first wipe the area with rubbing alcohol. Do not use household cleaners because they can leave a residue that will decrease the strips’ holding power.

While this option is preferable for damage-free installation, there may be some circumstances for which these strips are unsuitable including:

– Wallpaper, dark colored or freshly painted walls (check the paint manufacturer’s instructions for cure time)
– Brick, textured, or certain plaster walls
– An area near a heat source, or in direct sunlight
– Improperly painted or damaged walls
– Monitors that weigh over two pounds
– Installation during hot, humid weather

It’s important to follow all installation instructions carefully and test the shelf before placing your baby monitor on it. The Command Strips cannot be reused so be sure to determine exactly where you want it before applying it to the wall.

Mount with Screws

If your walls aren’t suited for the 3M Strips, the corner VuSee offers you the option of screw slots, and a flexible corner for secure placement and a more permanent hold. Use #8 or #10 drywall screws and fasten into a corner stud to avoid damage to your monitor or walls.

Other Wall Adhesives

If neither of the first two options work for you, there are alternate mounting tapes available. Scotch makes
several different types, including several heavy-duty, permanent ones. Be sure to read the packaging if you’re looking for removable tape and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.

Being a parent is one of the most challenging roles you’ll ever play. That’s why the VuSee team strives
to offer simple, unique products and exceptional service to make your life and those of your family safer,
easier and just all around better.

So the baby shower is over and her due date is almost here. You would like to do something to help the new mom-to-be, but you don’t want to intrude during those first few trying yet blissful weeks. She’s loaded up with 2 of everything that was on her registry plus plenty of things that weren’t. You think to yourself…what can I do to help but not overstep?

The important thing to do is to focus on mom and what she needs and wants. Here are a few ideas we came up with that should help take some stress off momma.

  1. The freezer is filled with casseroles, and that’s great, but what about easy snack food for mom. She’s not always going to have time to fix something for herself but we all know its’s important to keep mom hydrated and well nourished, especially if she is nursing. Fresh fruit is a great option. It’s easy to eat, refreshing and fights constipation (a common side effect after birth). Bring her a big bowl of strawberries, blueberries or her favorite fruits. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice over the fruit to help keep it from browning. Cheese cubes, string cheese, roasted nuts, granola, veggies and dip, hummus and mini muffins are some other great foods that can easily be eaten when you only have one hand available!
  2. Give mom a “lazy day kit.” Instead of getting overwhelmed with dishes and diapers, give her a package of recycled, disposable utensils, paper plates, napkins, paper towels, disposable diapers and wipes. Even if she is one of the greenest people you know, give her your permission to use them guilt-free! She’ll need a break eventually!
  3. The new baby gets spoiled with tons of gifts so why not give mom a special gift. A soft and fluffy new bathrobe, pretty pajamas or a nursing accessible shirt or dress. Wearing new pretty things makes every woman feel better. Give her one of your favorite books or a gift card for her Kindle. Out of Ideas? Check her Pinterest or Amazon accounts for wish list items such as jewelry, handmade lotions, soaps and candles.
  4. Hydration is often a forgotten piece of the food train but it can be a creative new treat for mom. There are a million new smoothie recipes out there, surprise her with a couple new ones a week, this is a treat for mom and gives her essential nutrients she needs. Fresh squeezed juice, sparkling water or lemonade are all good ideas too, but don’t forget she may want to feel like a normal human being again so a cold beer or bottle of wine are great options as well!
  5. Gift certificates for a massage, mani/pedi, chiro adjustment, haircut and style or a house cleaning. Most likely they will sit somewhere and not get used….unless you offer to go with mom! She won’t want to hire a babysitter and leave her baby at home. Knowing baby is with someone she trusts just a few feet from her in case she is needed will really help her relax!

What unique ideas have you given a new mom? We’d love to hear your ideas!
